How Do I Choose the Right Rug?

Start by assessing the size, weave and thickness of carpets in your area. This will help determine which carpet pad material is appropriate. The number of carpet pads on the market is almost dizzying, confusing and it is easy to become overwhelmed. Here is a short guide.

Small rugs

For rugs that are 3 feet by 5 feet or smaller, a thin, non-slip rug is recommended. This is especially true if the rug is in a high-traffic area. Thinner carpet pads are ideal for preventing sudden and brief changes in height (which can cause tripping hazards).

Large carpets

Any carpet that is 8ft x 10ft or larger and does not slip easily can use a carpet pad that does not have a non-slip component, such as a felt pad. Felt will protect the floor and help hold the rug in place. A 1/4" or 1/3" cushion is usually sufficient. Some people prefer extra cushioning and therefore require a ½ inch thick pad, but the border of that pad is a little too large.

Thin rugs

Flat-woven rugs do not usually lie flat; they tend to bend in the corners. Thin carpets are best padded with a combination of felt pad and rubber (⅛ or ¼ inch thick), depending on the level of cushioning required.

Thick carpets

Carpets will suit a ¼" or inch thick carpet pad. If the carpet is thick (½ inch or greater), a carpet pad that is too thick may be overkill and may cause a tripping hazard due to the change in height between the floor and the carpet.

Felt and Felt's pads are particularly suitable for use with rugs. They provide a luxurious feel underfoot and offer the benefits of thermal and acoustic insulation.
